Skins, Jackpots and the Results Sheet Nobody Printed

Before the night was over I went looking for three things: an entry list, a results sheet, a split time. I found none of them. What I found was a reaction piece, in which SwimSwam's Barry Revzin spoke to head coaches, athletes and the league's chief operating officer, Kyle Sockwell. The meet had been staged at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont, Illinois. There were skins races, there were super skins relays, there were jackpotted points. There was not a single time printed anywhere.

Swimming is strange in that way. Football survives without a published scoreline because the eye can confirm the goal happened. In swimming the eye waits for the number. I kept the lane logbook long after the stopwatch stopped mattering, because in this sport memory is not evidence.

Context: why a new league is being born again

The College Swimming League is a newly built competition, standing outside the established structure of NCAA dual meets and conference championships and trying to be an alternative. The attempt itself is not new. In 2026 the International Swimming League did exactly this: team scoring, broadcast-friendly sessions, skins and jackpots. Backed by Konstantin Grigorishin, it ran a handful of seasons and then stopped, leaving unpaid athlete salaries and a lawsuit behind it. You can import a format. You cannot import a pipeline. The ISL proved that much.

The crisis in American college swimming is the necessary backdrop. One university program after another has been cut, budgets trimmed, the sport pushed down the priority list. The discipline that hands out more Olympic medals than any other has a shaky foundation at the college level. A new league arriving in the middle of that is not just a business plan. It is a bet.

The venue is not a small part of the story either. The FMC Natatorium is modern, built with broadcast in mind. But a broadcast platform does not survive on its own; it needs a broadcast-friendly structure. That is where the format question lands, and that is where my interest actually sits.

Core: what this format actually measures

Skins racing brings back a childhood picture for me. At Australian club carnivals the skins came on a Friday night after the real races were done: one 50 after another, last place eliminated, the rest earning points. We clapped. Nobody wrote it into the logbook.

Skins is not really a race for the fastest swimmer. It is a race of repeated sprint capacity. Rest between rounds sits around a minute or less; lactic acid does not fully clear in that window and the phosphagen store does not refill. So the swimmer who wins the final round is often not the fastest one in the pool; he or she is the one who slows down least. The champion of a skins race is not speed but the rate of decay. It is measurable, but that measurement does not fit any column in a record book. Nobody hits an Olympic qualifying time in a skins race.

The super skins relay is a takeover contest held under fatigue. Relay starts change with tired shoulders, early take-offs become more likely, and a relay disqualification is the cruellest result this format can produce: one swimmer's half-second error erases an entire team's work. Coaches reshuffle the order here because the second swimmer has less room, and the call has to be made poolside in seconds.

The third element matters most and gets discussed least: jackpotted points. Put simply, points are awarded on margin. If a swimmer falls a set distance behind, an opponent can take those points. That single rule rewrites racing psychology. When points are based on the gap to the next lane rather than on the clock, a swimmer races the opponent, not the stopwatch. The result is drama for the crowd and poison for the record. A meet built around margins does not manufacture times; times are manufactured against the clock.

The source material does not include the detailed rules. So rather than speculate on rules, the useful exercise is to trace consequences. And the consequence is straightforward. Entry fees, travel, media days: all of it eventually arrives at one question. What argument does a coach write on next season's budget sheet? On what basis does a selector pick anyone? Above all, where does the meet sit in any coordinate system of time, whether world list, national list or conference list? Nowhere. Without numbers, a meet is not an event, it is a highlight.

I trust patterns, not press conferences. The pattern here is clear. A new commercial league shows its face in the first meet, and courtesy keeps the commentary positive; nothing negative gets said. But a league's real fitness test is not conducted in words, it is conducted at the next meet, in who shows up, which programmes, which coaches, and how many spectators come back. That is the real data.

Sixty-four matches taught me that a template is just a story that survived repetition. This league's template is being written right now. And the empty stadium taught me the difference between noise and signal once already; the sound of a celebration and an actual signal are not the same thing.

Contrarian angle

Here is what everyone is saying: excellent, a new format, new energy, college swimming is changing shape. My arithmetic runs the other way. The central problem in college swimming was never a shortage of entertainment. The problem is the calendar and a measurement culture. Changing the format does not produce better swimmers, better coaches or better funding. Rearranging the plate does not cure hunger.

The ISL lesson deserves to be remembered. It was as bold as any league on format and as careless as any league on pipeline: leaning on the same handful of stars each season, rented crowds, and then a quiet shutdown. There is a rule I have watched hold across upsets of every kind. Whatever starts to succeed has its best assets absorbed by the larger structure almost immediately. In our football world that is the transfer window; every transfer window is a lane change, check the blind spot before you celebrate. In college swimming the lane change is the transfer portal and NIL. If the league produces a star, that star will move to a bigger programme within two meets, because the portal demands evidence, and evidence means times. But a format that does not publish times cannot manufacture stars in the first place. That is a closed loop, and the absence of a results sheet sits at its centre.

I will admit I am not optimistic. The pattern suggests three roads are open in a new commercial league's first season. It becomes an ordinary meet and the times come back. It becomes a media product and the best swimmers fade away. Or it runs into the NCAA's boundary and stalls there. It cannot choose all three.

I will keep my own country's ledger open beside it. In the haor villages of Sunamganj, children under five are the ones who drown, roughly 40 of them a day. The outdoor 50-metre complex outside Mirpur remains our largest piece of infrastructure, and a 26.4-second 50m freestyle does not even reach a national age-group final. Our two Olympic swimmers go on universality places; that word is not a qualification, and nobody should be allowed to describe it as one in my copy or on my microphone. Our problem does not live at the level of format. It lives in the first fifteen metres of a child's life near water. To a child who never learned to float before learning to walk, a skins race is an impossibly distant plan.

Forward-looking

At the next meet I will be watching two documents: the entry list and the results sheet. If both appear, the league lives. If the next report is again built from interviews and atmosphere, then this is not a league, it is a channel. I will also track any NCAA or USA Swimming guidance, any broadcast or sponsorship deal, and whether spectators return. The split time reveals the runner; the final score reveals the system, and this meet's system has not yet spoken in its own language. A culture is what remains when the highlight reel is deleted. So the question is not how fun the match was. The question is what remains poolside once the reel is gone: a heat sheet, or a clip?
